Verbum sat sapienti & Libertas parta [Merlin/Arthur - G]
Artist: amphigoury
Title: Verbum sat sapienti
Pairing/Characters: Arthur/Merlin

Summary:It was a remarkable tale. Emrys Ambrosius, sentenced to the arena as damnati ad gladium, miraculously defeated three would-be dispatchers. After the pollice verso, he was made a proper gladiator and has been the crowd's (and the god's) favourite ever since.
But this?! What started off simply as wish of good luck from one warrior to another ended up in a philosophical debate. And, mehercule, it was inconceivable that Artorius Caputo Draccus, son of the Caesar and as such, Imperator Destinatus, Legatus legionis, Primi Ordines of the Legio quarta, Centurio of the Legio quinta, had just lost a battle of wits to this fatuus!

Love these, especially the light through Excalibur, shining down onto Merlin. Unf. The connection here is so evident. Well done.

OMG, I never even considered that the rudius could be Excalibur. Nice call! Thanks for the comment!!! ^____^

i love his walking stick! is that weird? I MEAN THE WHOLE THING IS GREAT BUT. walking stick. love it.

also, the armor is fucking badass.
amphigouryamphigoury on April 7th, 2013 04:00 pm (UTC)
LOL! The "walking stick" is actually a "vitis" - a symbol of the centurion's authority, and with which they mete out punishment. Sort of like a modern day drill cane or "swagger stick".

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment! ^___^

Gah! I am rendered wordless again!! I honestly can't TELL you just HOW much awesome I see here. However, I am leaving a comment, no matter how stupid I sound cuz these deserve ALL the PRAISE!!

To quote a really stupid movie (that I liked anyway): "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"

*genuflects*

Seriously,I can't even words but FEELS! I have so many!!

Edit: Still staring and GADS!! The level of detail you put into Arthur's armour is just MIND-BLOWING!! As always, your research shows and Shows and SHOWS!! I don't even want to think about how much time these pieces took. Wow, just all the Wow I have!

More staring. Arthur's face in the first one! Hee! "Wait...I've been bested by this idiot?!"

And as others have already mentioned, the play of light in the second is just astounding-and still with the detail!!

Eeeeee!!

FUCK YES GLADIATORS! I love the detail on Arthur's outfit, and Merlin's cheeky expression in the cell. The point of view on the second one is amazing, and I would kill for more of this. >)
amphigouryamphigoury on April 7th, 2013 04:06 pm (UTC)
Thanks Tempy!!! Holy smokes, the POV of the second one was tricky to get just right. I am so glad it turned out, and that you like it! THANKS!!!!

Oh, I love these! The LOOK on Artorius' face in the first one, and the summary makes it even funnier! And Ambrosius, he looks so much like, "Yeah. I really did win that one, deal with it." LOL!

The second is just beautiful; I love the lighting, the poses, and the idea of Artorius giving Ambrosius his freedom, and again, the expression is perfect. Also, holy cow, that's an insane amount of detail on the armor! Well done!

I love these!!! If I were to choose a favourite element out of either of them I think it would be Arthur's expression in the first piece. =)) Beautiful work, the pair of them!
amphigouryamphigoury on April 7th, 2013 04:10 pm (UTC)
A common habit in artists is to mimic the expressions you draw. My face was sore after drawing that epic pout! LOL!!!!!

Thank you so much for the great comment!!

This is so epic. Love the sun shining behind Arthur! And that Merlin gets freed. There's a film that could be made out of this. (Adore the setting too. Acient Rome. Yay!)
amphigouryamphigoury on April 7th, 2013 04:11 pm (UTC)
It's such a great AU setting! Fandom needs more of it!

Thank you so much!

I love the way you've done the lighting on both of those, the warm mellow, afternoon light of the first one, and the harsh sunlight of the second. The attention to detail is amazing, (e.g. Merlin's hands casting a shadow in the first one, and that stream of light coming between the canopies on the stands in the second one...)

Love the composition too, and their expressions. Just super stuff!!!!

amphigouryamphigoury on April 7th, 2013 04:14 pm (UTC)
Shading is not my strong suit, but luckily I have great betas who hold my hand through it, LOL! Both pieces were great studies of light and shadow, and both had crazy compositional challenges. I'm just so happy it all turned out! ^___^

Thanks for the wonderful comment, Itz!!!!

And now, where is the fic? I need it!
amphigouryamphigoury on April 7th, 2013 04:16 pm (UTC)
So much story contained in those two images, eh? I'm glad you enjoyed them!
